A Guide to Tiger Tattoo Designs

I would like to share with you some of the myths and legends surrounding the tiger and perhaps give you some ideas on finding the best tiger tattoo design.

Most tiger tattoo designs are of the head of the tiger and why not, the tiger has a regal look about it, a proud gaze that suggests strength and wisdom. As a matter of interest the Chinese hold the tiger in high regard, because the markings on the forehead are similar to the Chinese symbol for king.tribal-tattoo-lion-picture-007
A Tiger head tattoo design looks great blended with many other tattoo designs, such as, tribal, flowers, lettering, etc, and looks fantastic in a full arm tattoo design. As a matter of fact, no matter if you just use the head of the tiger, or the whole body, you can't go wrong. Now let me tell you something about the myths and legends of the tiger.

Tigers have been around for around 2 million years and over the years a lot of mythology has surrounded this majestic animal. In China the tiger is the 3rd animal in the Chinese zodiac. Yin and Yan are at times represented as a Yin tigress and a Yan dragon.Cool-Tiger-Tattoo-Designs-Picture-1000000000001
In early China history, the highest ranking general was known as "the tiger" as the tiger was seen as a symbol of life and death, destruction and aggression.

I won't preach to you about the decline of the tiger numbers due to the loss of habitat, but I will tell you that for many years every part of the tiger was used in Chinese medicine (even tiger wine. Yuk!). Thankfully, the Chinese government has put a stop to this practice, and dishes out severe penalties to poachers or anyone found selling tiger medications.Tiger-Tattoo-Designs-90000012
And if you thinking how nice it would to be up close and personnel with a tiger, then think again, a tiger can reach up to 3.3 meters (11ft) in length and weigh up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds). The jaw of the tiger is capable of crushing the vertebrae of any animal on earth (yikes!).tiger-tattoo-smart768000
A tiger has been documented as killing a fully grown Rhinoceros (yes, fully grown!!), and tigers have been known to smash the skulls of domestic cattle with a swipe of a paw. Tigers are such successful hunters they get to dine on a variety of animals, like rabbits, wild boar, pythons, young elephants, bears and crocodiles (that's right, Crocodiles!).

In Asian culture the tiger is the king of the beasts. The tiger is also seen as a symbol of power, strength, and boldness (no argument there), which is a pretty good reason to wear one on your arm I'd say.

Pin Up Girl Tattoos

Let's take a fascinating look at tattoo history now with this great master of old school tattoos. Jerry Collins is considered the father of tattoo, and his pinup tattoos have become extremely popular today.999Pin Up Girl Tattoos
Born in 1911, and died in 1973, Jerry was a sailor for most of his lifetime. He resided in Hawaii, where he had access to the great mysticism of the far east... he kept in close contact with the Japanese tattoo masers, and learned much from them.

He practiced his early tattoo art during a period in tattoo history when only sailors, bikers and social deviants got tattoos. He elevated the art of tattoo to a new level of respectability, and perfected methods of sterilization. He referred to the other tattoo practitioners working in less sanitary conditions as "scab artists".Pin Up Girl Tattoos56565656565656565656
He is most famous for his girly tattoos, his demon tattoos, she-devils, etc. Jerry really perfected the concept of the pin up girl as the the supervixen that would lead a poor sailor down the path to his destruction. She, in combination with liquor, gambling and fast cars, would come to be known as "man's ruin".Pin Up Girl Tattoos010101910191910190129
Sailor Jerry mentored such modern day tattoo masters as Ed Hardy, Cliff Raven and Mike Malone. Ed Hardy and Mike Malone inherited the rights to all of Jerry's tattoo flash art and tattoo drawings!Pin Up Girl Tattoos50000000000000000000006
With the resurgence in popularity of old school tattoos, Jerry's vintage pinup girls have become iconic. There is a line of products sporting his images now.. from clothing, ashtrays and playing cards, to 92 proof rum! Talk about ubiquitous and iconic-- I even saw his rum the other day at Rite Aid drug store!

Stacy Lande is a Los Angeles based artist, and her pin up art is most often placed in the lowbrow catagory. Her book, THE RED BOX, from Last Gasp press, features introductions from Robert Williams and Frank Kozik. Stacy has had a lifelong obsession with pin up girls, and her erotic paintings explore the more allegorical side of pinups. Her subjects are femme fatales and devil girls, and her fascination with the succubus has prompted her work to be described as "predatory pinups". Stacy's paintings have been featured in magazine articles, notably Juxtapoz, Detour, and Hot Rod Deluxe; films, notably Gone in 60 Seconds starring Angelina Jolie and Nicholas cage; and art books, such as Weirdo Deluxe, from Chronicle Books, and Vicious, Delcious, and Ambitious, from Schiffer Books.
